How different types of direction signs guide our attention

Simple arrows and words rapidly shift our visual attention to a cued location, but complex real-world map scenes fail to do so.

Key findings

Across the experiments, participants reacted significantly faster to targets when they were cued by arrows or words pointing to the correct location, showing a strong cue validity effect. However, satellite map scenes completely failed to shift attention, even when participants were told to imagine driving through them or were given up to 2400 ms to process them. This suggests that highly familiar, simple symbols are uniquely processed by the brain's attention systems compared to complex visual environments.

Methodology

The researchers conducted a series of laboratory tasks to observe how different formats of direction cues guide spatial attention. In one experiment, they analyzed 100 participants who reacted to targets after seeing arrows, written words, or satellite map scenes. In a follow-up study, they tested 101 participants, instructing them to view the map scenes from an active navigation perspective. In another variant, they altered the cue presentation times to 600 ms, 1200 ms, and 2400 ms to give participants more time to process the visually complex scenes.

Limitations

The study only tested young, computer-literate adults in a simplified virtual setting, so the results might not fully reflect how diverse age groups navigate in real, high-stress environments. Additionally, because the tasks relied on flat, static screens, they do not simulate the dynamic, multi-sensory feedback of real-world movement. Finally, the experiments do not rule out whether other types of complex visual cues, such as physical landmarks or three-dimensional street-level views, might engage attention differently than overhead satellite images.
