Does intense language translation training improve mental focus?

Key findings
Across both experiments, professional interpreters performed similarly to foreign-language teachers and monolinguals on almost all tests of mental focus, showing no clear general brain-training advantage. However, when the researchers combined the data from both experiments, they found very slight evidence that interpreters had a minor advantage in short-term memory capacity. Overall, the intense mental demands of dual-language switching did not translate into superior everyday cognitive skills like ignoring visual distractions.
Methodology
In the second experiment, researchers compared 59 participants, consisting of 19 professional interpreters, 20 foreign-language teachers, and 20 monolinguals. They tested these groups on tasks measuring different aspects of mental focus, including how well they block out distractions, hold information in mind, and adapt to new instructions. The interpreters had at least 4 years of experience translating speech in real-time.
Limitations
This study cannot rule out that cognitive benefits might only occur during the early stages of learning a foreign language, rather than after years of professional practice when the skill becomes automatic. Additionally, the small sample size makes it difficult to detect very subtle differences between the groups. Finally, because the experiments used artificial computer tasks like pressing buttons in response to arrows, the results may not reflect how these language experts manage complex information in real-world scenarios.
