Key findings
Across the tasks, the researchers found almost no evidence of a cognitive advantage for bilinguals compared to monolinguals. On the Simon task, monolinguals were often faster or more accurate than bilinguals, except among older adults where bilinguals had slightly higher accuracy. On the metalinguistic task, performance was driven by language dominance rather than bilingualism, as those more dominant in a language performed best on its respective grammar test.
Methodology
The researchers tested 650 participants on card sorting tasks, 557 on Simon tasks, and 354 on a metalinguistic task across seven age groups ranging from age 3 to over 60. Participants were categorized into four major home-language groups: English monolinguals, only Welsh at home, Welsh and English at home, or only English at home. The tasks measured their accuracy and reaction times when switching sorting rules, ignoring spatial placement cues, or judging grammatically correct but silly sentences.
Limitations
This study does not rule out the possibility that a bilingual advantage exists specifically for late-stage second language learners, as the participants here were simultaneous or very early sequential bilinguals who may process languages more automatically. Additionally, because the sample was drawn entirely from a highly supportive, bilingual region in North Wales, the results may not generalize to bilinguals in different sociological, cultural, or educational settings. Finally, the study's cross-sectional design means it cannot track individual cognitive trajectories over time.
