Idea-centered collaboration strengthened links among idea contribution, metacognitive regulation, and knowledge-artifact behaviors, supporting higher CPS quality. Authors conclude idea-centered scaffolding was the most useful strategy in this sample, while noting task-oriented scaffolds may help students who need more structure if idea-centered elements are integrated.
Methodology
In an 8-week graduate Distance and Online Education course, small triads solved authentic online-education problems under different scaffoldings (including minimally guided, task-oriented, and idea-oriented approaches). Researchers analyzed collaborative problem-solving processes across metacognitive, behavioral, and temporal dimensions.
Limitations
Only about nine analyzed volunteer participants after one withdrawal, in one course and short window, so findings are exploratory rather than definitive comparisons for all CPS settings.
