Does a daily 'Just Dance' break boost kids' brain power?

A daily 10-minute dance break at school did not improve children's cognitive performance or aerobic fitness over a 9-week period.

Key findings

The dance breaks did not produce any significant improvements in cognitive performance—such as attention or memory—nor did they boost physical fitness compared to the control group. However, children in the intervention group did engage in 2.9 more minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily during school hours.

Methodology

Researchers conducted a randomized controlled trial with 512 children aged 9 to 12 in Dutch primary schools. For a 9-week period, the active group participated in a daily 10-minute classroom dance break, while the control group completed short educational lessons. Researchers measured selective attention, memory retrieval, and inhibition before and after the program.

Limitations

This study does not rule out the possibility that longer exercise breaks are required to trigger cognitive benefits. Additionally, because the participants came from highly educated families, these findings may not apply to more diverse student populations. Finally, the study cannot determine if the physical demands of learning complex dance steps actually exhausted the children's mental energy, potentially masking any positive effects of the exercise itself.
