Does Kindergarten Yoga Improve Attention and Behavior?

Key findings

Children in the yoga group showed significant gains in their visual focus and hand-eye coordination speed compared to the other groups. Their teachers also reported a noticeable decrease in behaviors related to inattention and hyperactivity. These improvements in coordination and behavior showed large statistical effect sizes, indicating a strong practical impact of the yoga routine.

Methodology

The study split 45 healthy preschool children into three groups of 15. One group participated in 24 sessions of Hatha yoga over 12 weeks, with two 30-minute classes each week. Another group did standard physical education games, while the third group engaged in unstructured free play. Before and after the program, teachers rated the children's hyperactive and inattentive behaviors, while researchers tested their visual focus and coordination.

Limitations

Because the study relied on a relatively small sample of only 45 children from a single private school, the findings might not apply to all diverse populations. Additionally, since teachers evaluated the behavioral changes, there is a risk of bias if they guessed which children were practicing yoga, despite efforts to keep them uninformed. The study also does not show the long-term persistence of these benefits, as children were only tested 72 hours after the final session. Finally, it remains unclear whether these physical improvements translate directly into better actual school grades.
