Key findings
Excluding one palsa hotspot, median flux was −0.38 μg N2O-N m−2 h−1 (a sink). Light medians were +0.42 and dark −1.06 μg N2O-N m−2 h−1 (p < 0.001). The hotspot emitted 6.08 μg N2O-N m−2 h−1. Opaque-chamber literature had framed peatlands as sources (median +2.5).
Methodology
Over snow-free seasons 2022–2024 the authors made 1462 transparent- versus tarp-darkened chamber measurements of N2O (and CO2) across palsa, bog, and fen microhabitats at a thawing northern Sweden peatland, using 5-minute closures on a portable analyser.
Limitations
One site cannot revise the pan-Arctic budget. Plant and microbial mechanisms of the light switch are inferred, not isolated. Shoulder-season and winter fluxes remain sparse. The hotspot shows local emission can still dominate a plot.
