Key findings

Low-density OC falls from 43% on land to ~11% on the shelf. Coarse high-density fractions in 0–2 m still hold large plant-debris OC (δ13C about −26.5 to −28.3‰). Mid-shelf OC is mostly <38 μm mineral-associated material. Wave climate makes some 0–5 m cells bypass and others accumulate.

Methodology

Authors sampled a 2030 km Arctic coastal transect, density- and size-fractionated sediments (1.8 g cm−3; 38, 63, 200 μm), and measured OC, TN, δ13C plus SEM, comparing land, 0–2 m, 2–5 m, traps, and 30–55 m shelf.

Limitations

The study does not quantify how much trapped carbon is later remineralized to CO2 versus buried. Fractionation may leave plant fragments in ‘high-density’ bins via waterlogging, and five locations cannot represent all Arctic coasts.
