Phthalates, thyroid hormones, and adult blood lipids

In 222 Taiwanese adults, urinary phthalate metabolites tracked with thyroid hormones and lipid markers; T4 appeared to sit on the path from DEHP metabolites to HDL-C, but that mediation interval included the null.

Key findings

MMP associated with lower LDL-C; MEP with lower total cholesterol; ΣDEHP metabolites with higher HDL-C. T4 was estimated to mediate 32.2% of the ΣDEHPm–HDL-C link, but that indirect effect was not statistically significant.

Methodology

Authors measured nine urinary phthalate metabolites, thyroid hormones (including T4 and TBG), and fasting lipids in 222 adults, then used regression and mediation analysis (plus BKMR mixtures) to test whether thyroid function links phthalates to lipids.

Limitations

Cross-sectional mediation cannot establish that phthalates change lipids via thyroid hormones; the headline T4 path was not significant and the sample is modest.
