Does managing complex task rules explain fluid intelligence?

An individual's ability to hold and implement a complex set of new task rules is more strongly linked to their fluid intelligence than traditional memory span tasks.

Key findings

The ability to follow task rules correlated strongly with fluid intelligence at .57, which was significantly higher than the correlations for most other working memory tasks. Even though participants neglected rules on 28% of trials, 65% of these neglect cases occurred despite the participants still being able to correctly recall the rules afterward.

Methodology

Researchers tested 88 participants, aged 19 to 65 years, on several different cognitive tests. They compared performance on traditional working memory tasks, like digit and spatial spans, with performance on rule working memory tasks that required remembering and applying five rules. Fluid intelligence was measured using a standard non-verbal reasoning test.

Limitations

Because this study is purely correlational, it cannot prove that the ability to build a mental control program causes higher fluid intelligence. The study also relied on a relatively small sample of 88 adults, which limits generalizability to broader populations. Finally, it remains unclear whether training people on complex rule-following tasks would actually improve their general fluid intelligence.
