Does Mind-Body Exercise Help Attention in Older Adults?

Baduanjin mind-body exercise improved selective attention in older adults with mild cognitive impairment, but this improvement was not clearly linked to changes in brain network connections.
Key findings
After 24 weeks, the Baduanjin group showed a significant increase in selective attention accuracy compared to the control group. Brain scans revealed decreased functional connectivity in several regions of the dorsal attention network for the Baduanjin group compared to the other groups. However, statistical analysis did not find a direct relationship between these brain connectivity changes and the improvements in attention.
Methodology
The researchers assigned 60 older adults with mild cognitive impairment to three groups for a 24-week study. One group practiced Baduanjin, a traditional Chinese mind-body exercise, for 60 minutes three times a week; another group did brisk walking with the same schedule; and another group served as a usual-activity control. Before and after the training, participants completed attention tests and underwent resting-state functional MRI scans.
Limitations
The study cannot prove that changes in the dorsal attention network caused the behavioral attention improvements, as there was no significant correlation between the two. Because the sample size was relatively small with 20 participants per group, the statistical power to detect subtle brain-behavior links was limited. The study also cannot rule out that other factors, like social interaction or differences in exercise intensity, influenced the results since Baduanjin's intensity is difficult to measure.
