How past visual searches affect our future focus

Repetitive exposure to a target color speeds up search times over the long run, but only when we search for a combination of features rather than a single distinct color.

Key findings

All experiments demonstrated short-term priming, meaning participants found targets faster if the target color matched the previous trial. However, long-term priming—where participants remained faster at finding the color that was previously biased—only occurred in conjunction search tasks, even over neutral blocks of many trials. This long-term advantage persisted even when conjunction search was made easier or singleton search was made more difficult, suggesting that memory-based retrieval is triggered by the nature of the search task rather than its difficulty.

Methodology

Across several studies, the researchers tested how target frequency biases affect search performance. In Experiment 1A, 31 students searched for a uniquely colored diamond among other shapes. In Experiment 1B, 26 participants completed a more complex search. Bias blocks featured a target color on 80 % of the trials, while alternating neutral blocks lasted for 200 trials. Experiments 2A and 2B included 41 and 25 new participants to test the impact of visual difficulty.

Limitations

The findings are based on a highly specific sample of university students who were overwhelmingly female, which limits generalizability to broader demographics or age groups. While the study shows that task type determines long-term priming, it cannot explain the exact cognitive or neural mechanism that triggers episodic memory encoding for conjunction features but not singletons. Additionally, the study used a limited pair of target colors, leaving open the question of whether more complex color sets or different visual features would yield identical priming patterns.
