Do kids' social skills develop alongside their physical skills?

A child's ability to understand others' minds is independent of their physical motor skills and mirror neuron-related abilities like imitation.
Key findings
Theory of mind performance was strongly predicted by age and non-verbal intelligence but had no relationship with motor skills or mirroring abilities. Conversely, imitation and action-understanding tasks were closely related to each other and showed weak connections to basic motor planning and sequencing. These results indicate that social mentalizing and motor systems develop relatively independently rather than originating from a single, unified action system.
Methodology
Researchers evaluated 101 children aged between 4 and 12 years-old on a series of tasks measuring theory of mind, motor skills, imitation, and action understanding. To test their physical and social cognitive abilities, children completed tasks such as planning how to grip a bar, predicting the intent of photographed hand gestures, and solving classic false-belief puzzles. The researchers then analyzed whether performance in these physical domains correlated with social cognitive performance while controlling for age and non-verbal IQ.
Limitations
Because the study was cross-sectional rather than longitudinal, it cannot determine whether early motor achievements influence social development over longer periods. Additionally, some theory of mind tasks suffered from ceiling effects, meaning they might not have fully captured the true variation in older children's social abilities. Finally, since the sample did not include children with formal diagnoses of autism or developmental coordination disorder, the findings may not apply directly to clinical populations where these skills often co-occur.
