Embodied mind

Embodied mind views treat cognition as skillful engagement of a living body with a world of affordances, not as an inner computer sealed off from flesh and culture.
This is the undergraduate alternative to cognitivism: dementia, yoga, predictive processing and ecological information all pressure the idea that the mind is only in the head.

What we know
- If personhood is primarily bodily selfhood and implicit memory, dementia can disturb reflective perspective without erasing the self-as-subject.
- Active inference under the free-energy principle is read as enactive and embodied, unlike modular comparator models.
- Non-lawful regularities in a form of life can support skilled engagement with distant socio-cultural affordances.
- Cognitive boundaries are multiple nested Markov blankets; brain, body and world are not uniquely privileged.
Largest unresolved question
Mehling’s body-awareness paper is a phenomenological take on therapies; the Markov-blanket paper is a formal multi-scale claim — they share anti-internalism without sharing a method.
Common misconceptions
Dementia simply destroys the self.
If the self is bodily and implicit, loss of reflective meta-perspective is not the same as erasure of the subject.

Papers
5 studies in this library bear on Embodied mind, ordered by citations.
- What do mind-body therapies share?
Mehling and colleagues treat body awareness as a phenomenological, modifiable take on proprioception and interoception — the common ground of yoga, Feldenkrais, mindfulness and related practices.
- Predictive processing from cognitivism to autopoiesis
Active inference under the free-energy principle is enactive and embodied, unlike modular comparator models.
- Nested Markov blankets beyond internalism
Cognitive boundaries are multiple nested Markov blankets; brain, body, and world are not uniquely privileged.
- Is the self lost in dementia?
If personhood is primarily bodily selfhood and implicit memory, dementia disturbs reflective meta-perspective without erasing the self-as-subject.
- General ecological information for higher cognition
Non-lawful regularities in a form of life support skilled engagement with distant, socio-cultural affordances.

Study this conceptflashcards and short-answer questions
What is an affordance in the ecological paper’s sense?
A possibility for action in the environment, including distant socio-cultural opportunities supported by regularities in a form of life.
How does the dementia paper keep a self without reflective narrative?
By locating personhood in bodily selfhood and implicit memory rather than only in autobiographical reflection.
