A cognitive bias is a systematic departure of judgement from a defined normative standard. The term covers a collection of distinct measured effects with different causes and different moderators — not a single trait some people have more of.
Treating bias as one quantity licenses two mistakes that the studies here contradict: that a group showing a bias differs in kind from a group that does not, and that a bias measured on one judgement predicts bias on another. Both matter for how clinical and educational claims about 'debiasing' get read.

Cognitive bias is one underlying tendency that varies between people.
The effects measured here have different moderators: illusion of control tracked gambling status, complexity ratings tracked arousal, credibility judgements tracked processing ease, and contingency judgements varied with individualist versus collectivist values. People with a gambling problem think about chance in a fundamentally different way.

Both pathological gamblers and controls fell for the illusion of control in an associative learning task; the groups differed in degree (mean effectiveness rating 70.61 versus 57.20), and the difference was not explained by gamblers administering the treatment more often.

It establishes a difference in degree on that measure. In the gambling study both groups showed the illusion of control and the difference was in magnitude (70.61 versus 57.20), with equal rates of administering the treatment ruling out a behavioural explanation. It does not establish a qualitatively distinct reasoning style, nor that the bias caused the condition, since the design is cross-sectional.
Why is the easiness effect a problem for science communication rather than a success?
Because the outcome that moved was confidence, not accuracy. Viewers of simplified abstracts rated the studies as more credible and felt more able to evaluate them, with no evidence presented that their evaluations were better. A communication format that raises self-assessed competence without raising competence increases the chance of confident misreading.
