Attention is the set of mechanisms that determine which information gets processed when more is available than can be handled. The plural matters: selecting a location, resolving conflict between competing responses, sustaining focus over time and resisting a salient distractor are dissociable, and a task that measures one need not measure another.

Almost every claim about focus — that a training app improves it, that bilingualism sharpens it, that stimulation enhances it — depends on treating attention as a single thing that a single task can index. The studies here repeatedly show it is not, which is why apparently contradictory results often come from tasks measuring different components.

Largest unresolved question

Whether bilingualism confers an attentional advantage is unresolved within this corpus. One study found bilinguals outperformed monolinguals on auditory selective attention (r = −0.40 for late childhood bilinguals) and attentional switching; a lifespan study found almost no advantage across tasks, with monolinguals often faster or more accurate on the Simon task.

Common misconceptions

  • The more your mind is occupied, the more distractible you become.

    Visual working-memory load reduced distractor interference; only verbal load increased it, and high perceptual load reduced mind-wandering. The relationship depends on whether the load competes with the distractor for the same resources.

  • If you know a distractor is irrelevant, you can choose to ignore it.

    Colours previously associated with high reward captured attention even when participants held a top-down set that made them irrelevant, whereas zero-value colours did not.

  • Transcranial direct current stimulation reliably improves attention.

    In a sustained-attention task, active stimulation produced no significant effect on reaction time or timing scores; the large, consistent change was practice across sessions in both active and sham conditions.
