Attention is the set of mechanisms that determine which information gets processed when more is available than can be handled. The plural matters: selecting a location, resolving conflict between competing responses, sustaining focus over time and resisting a salient distractor are dissociable, and a task that measures one need not measure another.
Almost every claim about focus — that a training app improves it, that bilingualism sharpens it, that stimulation enhances it — depends on treating attention as a single thing that a single task can index. The studies here repeatedly show it is not, which is why apparently contradictory results often come from tasks measuring different components.

Increasing visual working-memory load at encoding or maintenance reduced distractor interference, while loading verbal working memory increased it (pooled r = −.31 across 56 participants). Raising perceptual load cut task-unrelated thoughts from 60.06% to 44.87%.

Targets in high-reward colours speeded responses when they appeared at the correct location and slowed them when they appeared elsewhere, while colours worth zero points produced no capture — and adopting a top-down set did not prevent the effect.

In the Stroop task, semantic conflict recruited left inferior frontal gyrus and right thalamus while response conflict recruited left middle and inferior frontal gyri with left parietal cortex; in visual search, short-term priming appeared everywhere but long-term priming only in conjunction search.
Practice is the reliable effect in these designs; the intervention often is not.
Attention-related performance improves substantially with practice, which is large enough to mask an intervention. Four weeks of breath-counting training significantly improved accuracy on the task, and in a sustained-attention study both ADHD and control groups got faster and more accurate across sessions regardless of whether stimulation was active or sham.

'Attention' names a family, so an improvement on one task licenses a claim about that task's component and no more — which is also why bilingual-advantage findings differ depending on whether the task taps selective attention, switching or Simon-type conflict.
