What we know

  1. Matching whole DSM syndromes is a bad validity test; well-understood symptoms or endophenotypes are the better target.
  2. If a model cannot deliver the knowledge that is supposed to justify the harm, using it fails scientifically and morally — 3Rs refinement is not enough.
  3. Model organisms are marked by versatility across targets and strategies over time, not merely fame or a genome.
  4. Human–animal neural chimeras are given degrees of moral status from awareness, autonomy and sociability rather than all-or-nothing status.

ART papers ask whether preventing trial-and-error on women and children is a weighty enough aim to justify animal work, a question separated from 3Rs refinement — not the same issue as psychiatric-model validity.

Common misconceptions

  • If the 3Rs are followed, an animal model is ethically in the clear.
