Short answer

No bilingual executive-function advantage appeared in this student sample, and the putative EF tasks showed poor convergent validity.

What happened

Paap and Greenberg's 2014 psychometric critique compared bilinguals and monolinguals on a battery of executive-function tasks. There was no bilingual advantage across 13 measures. Some significant differences favored monolinguals (Simon effect, antisaccade RT). Convergent validity was poor: tasks labeled as inhibition did not hang together (Simon vs flanker was a weak relationship in their report).

Why it matters

If the tasks do not measure one shared 'mental control' system, a null bilingual effect is not just a failed replication — it is a measurement problem. Claims that bilingualism trains a general executive brain need tasks that actually converge.

    Speaking two languages does not appear to improve mental control processes, and the tests psychologists use to measure these processes often fail to agree with one another.

    What it does not show

    This study does not prove that bilingualism never provides cognitive benefits, as it only looked at young, highly educated university students rather than children or older adults. Additionally, because the tasks themselves failed to correlate with each other, the study highlights that our current tests may not reliably capture general executive functioning. Finally, the research relies on self-reported ratings to determine bilingual proficiency, which might not be as precise as objective language testing.

Furthermore, the main tasks did not correlate with each other, suggesting they might measure different aspects of attention rather than a single general-purpose attentional control mechanism.
