Do Bilinguals Have Better Focus and Attention?

Key findings

The study found no significant differences between bilingual and monolingual participants in their search speeds, accuracy rates, or ability to identify morphed objects. Statistical testing using Bayes factors yielded values greater than 3 for all primary measures, indicating strong support for the null hypothesis that bilingualism does not affect these cognitive skills. Additionally, individual levels of bilingual experience, such as language switching frequency or second-language proficiency, did not correlate with performance on any task.

Methodology

Researchers tested 141 university students aged 18 to 29 years old to evaluate whether bilinguals have superior selective attention. Participants completed a complex visual search task with 24 target-present trials and 18 target-absent trials where they searched for a specific colored shape among distracting elements. They also completed an ambiguous figures task featuring seven different sequences of 11 drawings that gradually morphed from an initial object into another to measure how quickly they could disengage attention from an original interpretation.

Limitations

The results are limited to a sample of younger undergraduate students, meaning they cannot rule out potential bilingual advantages in young children or older adults. Because the data is correlational, it cannot prove that bilingualism never affects attention, only that no differences were observed under these specific experimental conditions. Furthermore, the main tasks did not correlate with each other, suggesting they might measure different aspects of attention rather than a single general-purpose attentional control mechanism.
