Ice sheets

11 studies1 discovery

Ice-sheet and glacier papers measure mass, melt, iceberg drift or sea-ice coupling for Greenland, Antarctica or mountain ice.

Ice is the slow climate system that sets long-term sea level.

What we know

  1. This library holds 11 empirical papers on ice sheets with measured outcomes rather than reviews.
  2. A 150 m Greenland bed and fjord map raises sea-level potential by 7 cm and shows 30–100% more glaciers can meet warm Atlantic Water.
  3. A recently calved iceberg dumped meltwater and triggered a bloom, while a decades-grounded berg barely changed nearby waters.
  4. BAM, SAM, and PSA polarities rearrange Antarctic precipitation, with PSA1 explaining ~40% of daily variability in West Antarctica.
  5. Losing Arctic sea ice in a +2 °C world adds winter snow to Greenland but more than offsets it with extra summer melt.

Largest unresolved question

A melt-season ANN or a giant-iceberg track is not a committed multi-metre sea-level number.

Common misconceptions

  • If air warms 1 °C, ice loss is linear and immediate.

SMB, dynamics, ocean melt and circulation patterns are nonlinear and delayed.
