Emotional Engagement

Emotional engagement is the affective side of involvement: interest, enjoyment, belonging, and interpersonal closeness in learning. It often moves differently from behavioral or cognitive engagement when modality or tools change.

If you only track clicks, you miss when students feel connected or alienated. These studies show emotional engagement responding to multimodal CMC, relationships in MIM, and tool preference.

Common misconceptions

  • Raising behavioral engagement automatically raises emotional engagement.

Modality trade-offs appear: designs that boost behavioral/cognitive engagement can leave emotional engagement relatively lower, and vice versa.
