How do high schoolers use tech to cheat on homework?

Students who frequently use digital tools to cheat on their homework score significantly lower on international standardized tests, especially in reading.
Key findings
The study revealed that digital homework cheating is highly prevalent: only 7.6% of students reported never doing it, while 62% reported copying friends' answers at least once a month. Students who were male, put less effort into their work, and were in lower-track academic programs were more likely to cheat. Crucially, digital dishonesty was a strong negative predictor of academic achievement, explaining a negative shift in test performance across reading, mathematics, and science.
Methodology
The researchers evaluated survey data from 4771 15-year-old students in Switzerland, of whom 48% were female. They measured how frequently these students engaged in digital cheating—such as copying friends' work or plagiarizing online content—using a new six-item scale. This self-reported behavior was then compared against the students' homework effort and their scores on standardized academic tests.
Limitations
Because this study is cross-sectional and correlational, it cannot prove that cheating causes poorer test scores; it is equally possible that struggling students cheat because they find the material too difficult. Additionally, all measures of homework cheating and academic effort were self-reported, which could introduce bias if students were hesitant to admit to dishonest behaviors. Finally, the findings are limited to the Swiss secondary education system and may not apply to other age groups or cultural contexts.
