Is virulence only in the germ?

Honigsbaum shows René Dubos attacking the germ-theory idea that virulence belongs to microbes alone, stressing host physiology, soil-like environments, and incomplete BCG protection.

Key findings

Virulence is not a property of microbes alone. Host resistance and environment matter. BCG cannot be complete while immunity-regulating components of the bacillus remain mysterious. Dubos’s soil insight later framed his disease ecology.

Methodology

The paper follows Dubos from soil chemistry and the SIII enzyme to tuberculosis: sequestered bacilli in granulomas, recrudescence when resistance ebbs, BCG’s incomplete shield, and the claim that pathogens cause symptoms through disturbance of the host’s normal processes.

Limitations

This is HPLS, not a new microbiology experiment. It does not re-measure BCG efficacy.
