Cognitive Reserve

Cognitive reserve refers to the brain's resilience and capacity to improvise, using alternative neural networks to maintain high function despite age-related decline, stress, or neurological challenges. It is built up through intellectually stimulating lifestyle factors, such as education, occupational complexity, and engaging leisure activities.

Psychologists study cognitive reserve to understand why individuals with identical levels of brain changes or aging show vastly different levels of cognitive impairment. It guides the design of preventative interventions, such as musical and linguistic training, to preserve mental functioning and improve the quality of life in older populations.
