Metacognition

Metacognition is broadly defined as 'thinking about thinking' or the ability to monitor and evaluate one's own cognitive processes. It involves reflecting on how well we perform mental tasks, such as judging our confidence in a memory or realizing we made a mistake during a decision. By evaluating our thoughts, we can adjust our strategies to improve learning and decision-making.

Understanding metacognition is vital because it determines how people self-regulate their learning, study habits, and everyday choices. Misjudging our own knowledge can lead to costly errors, whereas accurate metacognitive awareness helps us allocate mental resources more effectively.
