Episodic Memory

Episodic memory is a sub-system of long-term memory that allows individuals to encode, store, and consciously retrieve personally experienced events tied to a specific temporal and spatial context. It essentially serves as a mental time machine, enabling people to reconstruct past experiences along with the unique details of when and where they occurred.

Episodic memory is fundamental to human identity, enabling us to learn from our personal histories, construct a cohesive self-narrative, and plan for future events. In clinical settings, understanding episodic memory is critical because its impairment is one of the earliest and most prominent markers of neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease.
