Reconsolidation is the proposal that retrieving a stored memory returns it briefly to an unstable state, during which it can be altered before it restabilises. The practical claim is narrow: reactivation alone changes nothing, and an intervention alone changes nothing — the two have to coincide.
If it holds, reconsolidation is the only route by which an established memory can be edited rather than merely suppressed or outcompeted. That distinction matters clinically, because suppression and editing predict different relapse patterns. The human evidence in this library is small, and it is worth seeing exactly how small.

Common misconceptions
Playing Tetris after a distressing event prevents trauma.
The evidence is from an analogue trauma film in healthy volunteers, not a clinical traumatic event, and the effect required a reminder first. The authors are explicit that a film is not a life-threatening experience and that no other game was tested.
Reconsolidation erases memories.
Recognition memory for the film was unchanged, and in the facial-feedback study recall of story details was unaffected while emotional evaluation shifted. What moved was the affective and involuntary component, not the record.

The reactivation-plus-task combination, not either component, produced the effect. Only the group that saw reminder cues, waited, and then played Tetris reported fewer intrusive images over the following week (d = 1.14 versus no-task control; d = 0.84 versus Tetris alone and d = 1.11 versus reactivation alone in Experiment 2).

What changed was the involuntary, emotional component rather than the factual record. Recognition memory for the film was intact after the Tetris intervention, and unconsciously induced smiling during reactivation lowered the negative evaluation of a story without affecting recall of its details or general mood.

Why are the control conditions the most important part of a reconsolidation experiment?
Because the theoretical claim is about an interaction, not a main effect. Reconsolidation predicts that reactivation opens a window and the intervention acts within it, so the result only supports the theory if reactivation alone and intervention alone both fail. The Tetris study included exactly those arms and found the combination outperformed each (d = 0.84 versus Tetris-only, d = 1.11 versus reactivation-only). Without them, a simple distraction account would explain the data equally well.
