Memory consolidation is the set of processes that turn a newly encoded experience into a durable trace over hours and days. It is not a single event: what survives depends on how the material was structured at encoding, what happens in the interval, and — critically — how long you wait before testing.
Consolidation is where most of the practical questions about memory live: whether sleep helps, why some people forget normally at first and then far too fast, and whether a memory can still be changed once it has settled. It is also where testing intervals decide the answer, so studies that look contradictory often differ only in when they measured.

Emotional content changes what is retained as a unit. Events containing a negative person produced worse associative memory across element pairings and significantly lower statistical dependency, meaning the parts of the event were retrieved together less coherently.

Why can a study conclude that memory is unimpaired when a longer-delay study of the same people concludes the opposite?
Because consolidation unfolds over days, the retention interval is part of the measurement. In the accelerated long-term forgetting study, older and younger adults recalled similar numbers of word pairs immediately and at 30 minutes; only at seven days did the older group show significantly higher forgetting. A study that stopped at 30 minutes would have reported no deficit. This is a design difference, not a contradiction, and it is why retention interval should be read before the headline finding.
What would you need to show before claiming that sleep consolidates episodic memories as bound units?
You would need a sleep benefit on a measure that requires the binding, not just on its components. The children's word-pair study separated these: sleep reduced forgetting of word pairs and improved memory for list context, but the combined word-pair-plus-list measure did not significantly improve. Item and source benefits alone are consistent with sleep strengthening parts independently, so the binding claim needs the combined measure to move.
Two studies report that emotion 'affects' consolidation, one showing enhancement and one showing impairment. How can both be right?
They measured different things. Negative emotional content reduced associative memory across element pairings and lowered the statistical dependency with which an event's parts were retrieved together — coherence, not quantity. A study measuring only how many negative items are recalled could report enhancement at the same time. Specifying whether the outcome is item strength or within-event binding resolves most apparent conflicts in this literature.
