Cognitive reappraisal is an emotion regulation strategy that involves cognitively reframing or changing how one interprets a potentially emotional situation in order to alter its emotional impact. By altering the cognitive meaning of an event, an individual can successfully change their physiological and psychological emotional response. This strategy focuses on changing internal thoughts rather than suppressing outward emotional expressions.
Psychologists study cognitive reappraisal because it is consistently linked to superior emotional well-being, lower stress, and greater mental flexibility. Understanding its cognitive prerequisites and underlying neural pathways can help design better clinical interventions for psychological disorders characterized by emotional dysregulation.
