Water quality

Water-quality studies track contaminants, microbes or chemistry in drinking water, wastewater or surface water and what that implies for people or ecosystems.

Water is how many pollutants actually reach households and aquatic life.

What we know

  1. This library holds 6 empirical papers on water quality with measured outcomes rather than reviews.
  2. Open-science LC-HRMS of 12 sites on four rivers near Dhaka found tens of thousands of chemical features, including urban surfactants, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals, in a rarely monitored South Asian waterscape.
  3. After Hurricane Florence, 41.2% of tested wells had total coliform and 11.7% E. coli—1.2× and 7.8× routine rates—with higher contamination inside flood boundaries.
  4. Two Chinese plants dropped MP/NP mass from 26.23 and 11.29 μg/L in influent to 1.75 and 0.71 μg/L in tertiary effluent, with nanoplastics removed least.
  5. In two protected English harbours, CSO discharge days raised mixed chemical burdens 25- to 43-fold above a dry-spring baseline, with imidacloprid exceeding PNEC.

Largest unresolved question

A flood-associated well study or a wastewater reactor is not a national drinking-water standard.

Common misconceptions

  • If a pathogen is found in water, everyone who drinks it gets sick.

Detection is not the same as a quantified infection risk for a population.
