Persistent pollutants

10 studies1 discovery

Persistent pollutants (PFAS, POPs and related long-lived chemicals) are measured in dust, water, wildlife or people because they do not go away on human timescales.

PFAS and legacy organics are the undergraduate example of 'the dose is in the environment, not just the factory.'

What we know

  1. This library holds 10 empirical papers on persistent pollutants with measured outcomes rather than reviews.
  2. In 16,224 Veneto adults aged 20–39 exposed via contaminated drinking water, higher serum PFOA, PFOS, and PFHxS associated with hypertension, with the signal concentrated in men.
  3. Ultrashort PFAS like TFA now dominate dust, water, and serum in sampled US homes.
  4. MIREC found many POPs in maternal plasma but few in cord blood; parity, age, fish, and birthplace predicted levels.
  5. Long-chain PFCAs mark seafood/whale diets, while PFHxS and N-EtFOSAA mark carpets and consumer products in children.

Largest unresolved question

Indoor medians in one cohort are not global inventories, and detection is not a health effect.

Common misconceptions

  • Banning one long-chain PFAS removes the problem.

Shorter-chain replacements often dominate dust, water and serum after phase-outs.
