Models & animals

When is an animal model unethical as well as invalid?

If an animal model cannot deliver the knowledge that is supposed to justify the harm, using it fails scientifically and morally — 3Rs are not enough.

Study at a glance

Design
Other — Ethics–validity argument using activity-based anorexia as a case of incomplete animal modelling
N
Conceptual case analysis of ABA vs anorexia nervosa; not an empirical sample
Population
Animal models in neuropsychiatry (esp. activity-based anorexia) and harm–benefit justification
Outcome
Invalid models fail scientifically and morally; 3Rs alone are insufficient

Structured fields used in claim comparison tables when every cited study has a complete layer.

Key findings

Invalid models are uninformative and morally unjustified. Uncertainty is especially high in neuropsychiatry. ABA is not a model of AN as a whole. Ethics cannot be reduced to the 3Rs; research quality benefits from ethical reflection.

Methodology

The authors link the harm–benefit justification of animal research to validity. They take activity-based anorexia (ABA) as the leading rodent model of anorexia nervosa, show it models a symptom (excessive exercise under food restriction) rather than the whole disorder, and name a standardisation–translation paradox. They urge reversed translation from the clinic and treat ethics as more than harm reduction.

Limitations

This is not a new ABA experiment and does not quantify how often ABA findings fail in humans. EU 2010 is cited as legal background, not analysed as a full statute.

Role on claims

Each row is a claim on a concept or method page where this paper supports, challenges, or qualifies the statement. Roles are hand-checked — not a model guess.

  • SupportsModels & animalsconcept

If a model cannot deliver the knowledge that is supposed to justify the harm, using it fails scientifically and morally — 3Rs refinement is not enough.

Evidence for the claim as stated.

  • SupportsCase Study Methodmethod

A single animal model can be used to link scientific validity to ethical justification. Taking activity-based anorexia as the leading rodent model of anorexia nervosa, the authors show it models one symptom (excessive exercise under food restriction) rather than the whole disorder, name a standardisation-translation paradox, and conclude that an invalid model is both uninformative and morally unjustified, so the 3Rs are not enough.

Evidence for the claim as stated.

  • SupportsCase Study Methodmethod

Case-based philosophy of science produces reconstructions and arguments, not new scientific results. The marine paper is a methodological manifesto rather than an oceanographic dataset, the anorexia paper runs no new experiment and does not quantify how often the model's findings fail in humans, and the reductionism paper does not complete all of thermodynamics.

Evidence for the claim as stated.

Depth against breadth. The reductionism and anorexia papers each reconstruct one case in detail and draw conclusions bounded by it; the pluralism paper deliberately surveys many positions at once and accepts that it cannot detail each author's commitments. The first approach can say more about its case, the second more about the shape of the field.

Evidence for the claim as stated.
