Janus micromotors as tiny nanoparticle factories

Self-propelled Janus particles loaded with Cd2+ or citrate make CdS quantum dots or gold nanoparticles in microliter volumes within 15 minutes.
Key findings
CdS QDs form with ATP as cap; AuNPs form in citrate or HAuCl4 modes. Motion cuts gold synthesis from 24 h in vessels to 15 min and waste below 800 μL. Bubble-propelled motors give nearly 100% 4-nitrophenol conversion versus stirred or static controls.
Methodology
Authors built Pt-propelled Janus micromotors carrying Cd2+ or citrate/Au(III), swam them in sulfide or gold-salt solutions, and compared moving versus static syntheses plus 4-nitrophenol catalysis by the trapped AuNPs.
Limitations
Scale-up beyond microliters, replacement of Pt by cheap MnO2, and quantitative environmental 4-nitrophenol remediation are proposed rather than demonstrated at scale.
