Phonological Awareness

Phonological awareness is the foundational ability to recognize, isolate, and manipulate the spoken sound structures of language, such as syllables, rhymes, and individual phonemes. It is an oral language skill that operates independently of print, allowing individuals to understand how spoken words are constructed from smaller units of sound. This skill acts as a crucial stepping stone for mapping sounds to letters when learning to read.

Psychologists and educators study phonological awareness because it serves as one of the most powerful early predictors of a child's future reading, spelling, and decoding success.
