What changed
Dated edits to this page's evidence: studies added or removed from a claim, claims added or withdrawn, and new explanations tagged here. Rewordings are not listed.
- Concept page published
Treatment adherence is the extent to which patients take medication or follow a prescribed regimen as intended.
Efficacy collapses without adherence. Digital reminders, education, and packaging strategies are tested as adherence levers.
Evidence
What the evidence shows
Drawn from 9 studies in this library. Each finding starts with a plain-language takeaway, then the denser detail. Supports means evidence for a finding; Challenges means evidence against a stated position; Qualifies marks scope with a short note on each study’s contribution. Challenged positions are labeled — they are not findings.
Multiple studies in this library examine treatment adherence with empirical patient or population outcomes rather than opinion alone.
- Does wireless BP monitoring boost patient activation’s benefits?

Adherence scores rose 28.3% and missed doses fell 27.3% with ALICE; among those with ≥2 prior errors, medication errors fell 41.2%. Clinical labs did not meaningfully improve in 3 months.
Module completion fell from 80% (module 1) to 55% (module 2); older age and comorbidity predicted lower completion (OR 0.33 for comorbidity).
Median adherence 99.1% (UPC) and 97.2% (MEMS); few had sustained low UPC adherence; among those triggered, 92% returned to ≥80% UPC after intervention sessions.
Physician training was linked to better patient health literacy, medication adherence, self-efficacy, and blood-pressure outcomes versus usual care.
Open questions
Tensions and limits
Some items are genuine disagreements on the same question. Others mark different assays, populations, or outcomes — limits on how far one study travels — not a forced fight between papers.
Effect sizes and settings differ across treatment adherence studies — digital vs clinic, trial vs observational — so results should not be pooled casually.

Common misconceptions
Treatment Adherence findings always generalise to every clinic.
These studies are context-bound; designs, populations, and endpoints limit transfer.

What is Treatment Adherence and why do health students study it?
Treatment adherence is the extent to which patients take medication or follow a prescribed regimen as intended. Efficacy collapses without adherence. Digital reminders, education, and packaging strategies are tested as adherence levers.
Name one limit of the evidence base for Treatment Adherence in this library.
Single-setting trials, observational designs, or digital-only samples limit causal and external claims.
The studies
9 studies in this library bear on Treatment Adherence, ordered by citations. The first 8 are shown.
- Do heart texts improve lifestyle adherence?
A text-and-internet cardiac rehab program improved short-term lifestyle adherence after CHD, but the benefit faded by 6 months.
- English TBQ validation
Researchers adapted and validated an English Treatment Burden Questionnaire for chronic illness across US/UK/Canada/Australia using PatientsLikeMe.
- PrEP adherence in Partners PrEP
In a Partners PrEP adherence substudy, median pill-count and MEMS adherence exceeded 97%, and counseling restored most low adherers to ≥80%.
- TB pillbox reminders beat SMS for doses
In a China cluster RCT, medication-monitor reminders cut poor TB adherence 40–50%, while text messages mainly reduced loss to follow-up.
- Digital pills cut blood pressure faster
Patients with uncontrolled hypertension and type 2 diabetes using digital medicines had larger 4-week SBP drops than usual care.
- Doctor communication training helps hypertension care
Training physicians in communication skills improved hypertensive patients’ health literacy, blood pressure control, adherence, and self-efficacy in an Iranian RCT.
- Does wireless BP monitoring boost patient activation’s benefits?
In hypertensive adults, a wireless self-monitoring program strengthened links between rising patient activation and better behaviours/BP control.
- ALICE pillbox app RCT
A Spanish tablet pillbox app improved self-reported adherence and reduced missed doses over 3 months in older adults on multiple medicines.
